    NOTE TAKING
Remember, as soon as you find a credible resource that is worthy of your paper, be sure to complete the citation first and give your source a letter so that all notes can be organized and easy to access.
Do not run into the nightmare of forgetting to cite page or paragraph number. It is a big time waster, not to mention frustrating enough to make you want to eat 3 whole bags of Hershey Kisses... All of this results in frustration, a stomach ache, and the guilt of having just eaten 3 whole bags of Hershey Kisses!!
That said, you are seniors in high school, and I am quite sure that you are adept at figuring out how you best take notes and stay organized. I give you, therefore, the option to take notes your way. BUT, they must include all required elements and be able to be 'submitted' or viewed easily by me. So, I recommend one of the following:
    1. Download and use the template below. There are two templates there; use whichever works best for you.
    2. Use your own linoit board. Only you and I will be members so no pesky people manipulating stickies on you! Lino allows you to organize like you did with the good old fashioned note card (remember DEBATE? Cringe Cringe), but it saves you time in many ways and allows you to always have access to your work and never 'lose' your stuff. See sample image for how you might organize a board in the folder aptly named, Linoit Tempate.
    3. Good Old Fashioned Notecards - You have done these and done these. If you like this method, use it! Requirements in folder named "Good Old Fashioned Notecards"
    4. Another Way? Noodletools - have an acct? Easy to share with a teacher who doesn't? Use it!
Google Docs - Go for it!
Random pieces of paper, mixed with random e-mails, screenshots, etc.? NOT HAPPENING
Staying organized is the key to success. So decide upon a plan, commit to it, and make it work!
    Some Options:
    Linoit.com
See attached file for a sample of how you might organize your board(s).
    {Linoit Board Sample.docx}
Here is another format you might try if you are using word or Google Docs:
    {Research Template Honors Wagner.docx}
    Or a more basic one:
    {Template for Research Notes.doc}
Finally, perhaps you want to try those good old fashioned note card format:

    RESEARCH PAPER
    {research paper.jpg} research paper.jpg
The internet, while providing infinite amounts of information, is not a fact checker. In fact, the majority of internet sources will not serve as reliable, authoritative sources that have been peer reviewed and found true. Translation: the information just isn't true. Consider the many motives that people have for presenting information in a 'certain' way. In a world where people are more than likely trying to advance their own idea, regardless of truth, it is critically important that you can identify the difference between truth and trash.
Anytime you include a piece of information in your writing that you have found in your research, you have essentially, invited another person to your side of the debate table. Your opponent will certainly challenge this new 'weapon' and your new weapon must be able to defend itself. If your source loses credibility, so do you.
In-text citation rules: When you paraphrase or quote information, you must include in your sentence the date, the authority, and the authority of this author.
Parenthetical Citation: After the paraphrase or quote information, you must include parenthesis. Within parenthesis, write the author, date, and page number. See the APA citation guide (below) for exceptions.
Use the color coded guide from Del Tech (below) to help you cite your sources in APA format. See the end of the guide for all the tips you need.

*Remember, the first time you use an outside source in your paper, you must introduce that source with full name and something to establish the credibility of the source. From that point on, you can use either signal phrase or parenthetical citations to cite.

In-Text Citation Tips from Purdue OWL
Citing indirect sources: If you use a source that was cited in another source, name the original source in your signal phrase. List the secondary source in your referenc list (annotated bib) and include the secondary source in the parentheses.
Johnson argued that... (as cited in Smith, 2003, p. 102)
Two or More works by same author in text of paper:
Usually, including the year of publication differentiates the source citation to which you are referring. If, however, the works come from the same year, organize them in your reference list alphabetically by the title of the article or the chapter. Then assign letter suffixes to the year. Refer to these sources in your essay as they appear in your reference list, e.g. : Berndt (1981a) makes similar claims.
In annotated bib, notice the lowercase letter after the date. This should match the in-text citation.
Berndt, T.J. (1981a). Age changes and changes ov..... rest of citation
Berndt, T.J. (1981b). Effects of friendship on pro-soc.... rest of citation

    in text citations
Please remember the formatting of the paper (title page, pagination, use of in-text citations, etc.) is the same as the recent multi-page paper that you completed.
Please let me know if you have any questions in a timely manner.

x-"To see what is in front of one's nose requires constant struggle." - George Orwell"To see what is in front of one's nose requires constant struggle." - George Orwell
Over the course of our first unit, we looked at the impact of what happens when logic fails. From advertisers who desire to create loyal brand followers (remember that Apple ad?) to those leaders in our world’s history who manipulated logic and ultimately destroyed many lives, fallacies are everywhere. We traveled to D.C. to see how newspapers carefully pick just the right headlines and how photographers use images to create compelling arguments. We also bore witness to one of the darkest times in our world's history. We saw the destruction caused by man's inhumanity to man.
While hindsight often provides clarity, sometimes it is difficult to see the failed logic to which we are exposed in our every day lives. Images and information bombard us with recommendations about what choices will lead to a better, stronger, healthier, more vibrant life. Many of these messages can contradict each other, and we easily can become confused about the choices we make or think we should make.
Your task is to write an informative paper that tackles a recommended product or a recommended way of life that is advertised as ‘good for you’ and after careful reading and research, decide the truth of the matter.
Think about anything that claims you will be:
    o stronger
    o faster
    o healthier
    o thinner
    o more muscular
    o more alert

    Requirements:Requirements:
Cover Page: With Running Header, Original Title, Times New Roman, Font 12...look up APA cover page design.
Annotated Bibliography: You will need all of your sources written in an annotated bibliography where you cite the source information in APA format and also include a brief paragraph justifying the credibility of the source. Justifying credibility includes verifying the author/source expertise on the subject, impressing upon your audience the number of published works in their name and/or the experience they have gained which lends to speaking about the topic.
Thesis: Your thesis will be created AFTER you are done researching. I mean, honestly, how can you know what the conclusion of your research will be before you are done researching. While researching you will change your mind on the topic a lot (or at least you should). Your research should fairly defend both sides of the argument and not show bias. Your thesis will derive from the TRUTH and not just what you want the truth to sound like.
Development Process: After you have completed researching and identified your claim, it's time to develop this research into a reader-friendly paper that clearly moves your audience through what is important to know about this huge topic. Every day in class we will work on a part of the paper. Bring your laptops if you would like so you can work right in class. I can lock them up for you.
Gathering and Organizing InformationFor this assignment, you will be using linoit to organize your notes. You will create your own group and invite me to it. See linoit instructions if you need help. Then you can organize your boards by source or by argument...You decide what color stickies to use. Be sure that you create stickies with source info (some people do that on one board). Then every sticky is tagged with source info. so that you stay organized.See me if you want some help organizing your board(s).You will earn process points for your notes.
Come prepared and use your time out of class to stay on top of this paper.
We will practice and you will be graded with the following in mind:
    Using in-text and parenthetical citations.
Structuring your paper with clear topic sentences and controlling key words.
Building momentum and flow with transitions.
Writing a really high interest introduction.
Closing with a smart and forward thinking conclusion.
*Of course, sentence variety, effective word choice, correct spelling, proper use of commas, and all of the other basics of writing are expected. Don't lose points in these categories. Find an editor or step up your game yourself. These expectations have to be met.

Today, we will look at what happens when a truth is exposed. You will be reading a recent article from The Huffington Post, linked below. As you read, examine HOW the writer exposes a dangerous "truth," one that remained hidden from the public due to its impact on the public health, and significantly, one that is right at our doorstep.
